What is good for a manufacturer isn't always good for the end users.
It is the competition among manufacturers that drives them to release new products/features.
The original PC and PC/AT line died because IBM was alone and didn't care too much about the products. When being overrun by better "copies" they desperately tried the PS/2 line which people mostly ignored. All it basically got us whas the PS/2 mouse/keyboard connector, and the VGA/XGA graphics resolution.
Intel got a significant injection by having to fight off the Atmel Athlon processors. The earlier x86 alternatives where not good enough for Intel to need to care about.
The biggest airplanes wouldn't be what they are without the Boeing/Airbus competition. Why spending billions on improving fuel economy if you are already the best?
