I do want to work off available light but i want to try some off camera lighting also with a shoot through umbrella, but im not sure if the canon wireless system will work outside 100%

The IR master/slave triggering will only work if there is clear line of sight between the IR sensors on the sppedlights... so an umbrella will most likely be a no go I'm afraid.
