Hello All.. I have a question while the topic of discussion is the new 40D. I have a 1D mark II (not N) which I bought used. I've been thinking of selling it because my level of skill at this point and my needs make me owning this thing seem kind of like a waste of good equipment. With the new 40D coming out, I'm thinking I could probably sell the Mark II for about $2K (my guess it's got about 70 000 actuations on it, rated for 200 000) and buy the new 40D plus either a new lens or flash. Anybody have thoughts on whether this is a good or bad idea?

It's a mode that will retain a lot more highlight data. Pretty much what it does is it drops the exposure of the highlights by one stop and blends it with the rest of the photo. I haven't really tried it or figured it out yet, but others have been saying it works really well.

Thanks, just read about it here (external link). Looks awesome!

I just read through the list of updates on the 40D,HERE (external link)....and WOW! That is an unbelievable list of goodies. The weather sealing appears only to be on the battery & card doors (not the buttons) but that's better than nothing. Finally, ISO in the viewfinder. Three Custom modes, that would be sooooo nice.

I had been holding out to see what the new version of the 5D was going to be...but after buying the 10-22...I think the 40D is where it's at, for me.

Yup - took advantage of last Thanksgiving's sales chaos. Dell was running a short-lived double discount in the Small Biz/Electronics area or some such for about 72 hours. This was also during Canon's double rebate period.

I got a 5D body - after the rebate it was $1786.

OMG!!!

I'm sure gonna watch for another one of those sales. I got my 85mm 1.8 lens from them for under 300 bucks when the going retail price was $380.

But the 40D will be my first priority. Since I have to replace both bodies I'm considering a 5D primary and 40D secondary.

I think it would be a good idea personally. I'm wowed at the 40D specs. But the real verdict will come when people buy it and we see the image quality. But I can't see it being bad. Canon doesn't put out cameras with poor image quality.

Amanda, it's totally your call....

but let me say this...

with every new body that comes out, there are always kinks and problems with it. Also, no need to say good equipment is wasted on you. Your first wedding pictures were far better than a lot of peoples first photos. Additionally, you're coming to Albany in November and should learn tons. You might wanna hold on to it. :-)

The interchangeable focus screens, is that just the screen we look through (with the 9 AF points on it)? Does that mean that we can put in different focus screens with the AF points in different places, and have some with the grids imprinted on them for better composition? I'm a little bit confused on this one.

Good idea. Just make sure you have two bodies when you shoot a wedding.

So once it comes out, buying it now, won't mean we will miss any great deals right?

I seriously doubt the MK III or the 40D will be reduced in price for black friday. I would be very shocked.

That means we can probably have focus screens with gridlines or stuff on it. It will not change the position of the AF sensors at all. I believe there is also some kind of split prism manual focus screen!!!!! YAY!!! Reminds me of shooting manual focus lenses almost two decades ago. Split prisms ROCK!
