Am I Sharpening Correctly?

I've been taking Scott Kelby's advice on sharpening:


  1. I go to Image/Mode/Lab Color
  2. I select Lightness from the channels
  3. I go to Filter/Sharpen/Unsharp Mask and apply
  4. I apply it a 2nd time.....if too sharp, I fade it 50%
I really need to know everything on CS3, im a beginer and scott kelby's photoshop book didnt cover enough for me

Any book recomendations?

Do the same steps but instead use Smart Sharpen rather than USM. You can also use the selection tool to choose a certain area for sharpening.
