Some from today's shoot. Just looking for some general C&C, good and bad are equally welcome.

Sorry these are quite soft, they're all flickr resizes. The original 550x800's are on the gallery, along with the rest of the shots:

I had completely forgotten about this post, as I received no alerts for replies! Just looking for some honest C&C, good and bad are both very much appreciated. This is my first real engagement shoot, and depending on how the wedding goes in November I may be trying to do more of these. Thanks!

Your images are average, have some technical problems (white bal), and don't engage me. I don't get a sense of who they are, or any sense of a connection between then. They could be models, friends, or strangers. I don't say this to be critical, I say this to give you an idea of the direction you need to take to improve. You need to show the connection between couples, how they feel about each other, the chemistry, and you have ten minutes to do it.

You need to make the couple more comfortable. Get to know them a little more, then get the h3ll out of the way while they're with each other. People need permission to express themselves around you, they're not used to photographers, cameras, or being themselves around anyone else. The key is realizing this, then getting experience doing it.

there is no way i would be posing the above shot with strangers or even a friend..

they are not too bad.. i think they are quite nice, i guess there is not a full on loving shot but that could be how the couple are in real life

Thanks for all your comments, particularly Tim. I've been doing PP with freeware (Irfanview), but will soon be stepping up to CS3. Hopefully that will help improve the technical aspect of my shots.

To be honest, I felt like I had done a decent job allowing them to express themselves while on the shoot, and my peers who critiqued my work felt the same. Next time I'm hoping to work with a 70-200 2.8, I'm thinking that would create a healthier separation between the clients and myself, hopefully allowing them to feel more comfortable.

All of your advice is invaluable, thanks again.

#3 and #5 are my favs. I believe #3 shows a great connection between the couple. Good job. My hmo... I think engagements present a challange that you don't encountered of course when doing..... say weddings. During a wedding, you don't have to create the emotions or stage the scene. One thing I will do on my next engagements is to get the couple to concentrate on each other so that their natural emotions come out and not look at the camera.

I would clone the person standing in the water on #4.

Thanks, Tony. That's a good suggestion, I'll have to explore that when CS3 comes in.
