It may be that I'm sore from my expedition at the lake yesterday...but with the supposed leak of the 40d features from amazon.com...I find myself slightly Irritated with Canon.
A couple of months ago, Canon released the 1d-mkIII. It brought us many new features in a wonderful package. Two of the Major selling points for the Mark 3 were its 10fps...and its live view function. Another feature was its "Highlight Tone Priority" custom function, allowing for more preserved detail in the highlight and shadow areas. The mark 3 also boasted a 3 inch lcd for image playback, as well as the standard weather sealing on the 1-series cameras.

Now..the leaked specs indicate (and granted...there could be some incorrect information) that the new 40d will have Live View functionality, Highlight tone priority, a 3 inch lcd...and possible weather sealing.
at a price tag roughly 1/4 of the mkIII

I just feel that Canon has done a semi poor job of giving the Mark III a decent selling point over the 40d, and I also feel a bit pissed that Canon has included the same functions I paid more for...on a cheaper camera.

Anyway...just my gripe for today.

Exactly... When I bought my second DSLR (20D) three years ago, I decided it was time to get rid of some of my film gear. I gave two Minolta X-700 outfits to the local high school, and sold my two Canon EOS A2 bodies. Which film camera did I keep? My EOS-1... Why? Because it had a much more robust build than the A2. I figured if I ever lost my hammer I could use it to nail things... :D

And the [properly functioning] Mark III is still worth 4 times the 40D price.

Another big selling point is the high-iso performance. Its yet to be seen if the 40d can match the usefulness of the mark-iii at 1600 or 3200.

If it does I may downsize :)

I agree with racketman but would like to add full weather sealing. Now granted most people don't need it but I think that most of the people that get the 1 series cameras are not amateur professionals. They are professionals who use that camera sun, rain or snow. Thats why practically every PJ I know owns a 1 series camera whether its the 1D or 1Ds. They are proven bodies that will stand up to practically anything the PJ throws at it. When I owned my 1D, I knew that I could drop it and it would still take photos. I don't know if I could say that about my 20D. I guess thats why I have UpStraps attached to both of mine!

According to the specs from Amazon.com, it has weather sealing. You have to use the new grip instead of the old one (which will fit it), 580 EXII, L glass, and/or the WFT-E3a wireless transmitter (and apparently vertical grip) and go shooting in the rain.

If a lot of the new features as seen on the 1D MkIII do appear on the 40D,. then that will make the MkII to 40D comparison virtually identical to the one we had historaically,.

ie:

1D MkII Vs. 20D..
1D MkIIn Vs. 30D

as the new features became available within months the Jr. member was released with there similar upgrades..
20D was about 4 months after MkII
30D was about the same delay, and now 40D about the same again.

Hey, why the griping? This means you can get a camera with a heap of the good features of a more expensive camera for a fraction of the price! ;)

Not that you can really compare the two on every level.. AF, build quality, differently sized sensors, different frame rates, so on and so forth. I don't know how many pros would be upgrading to a 40D from an older 1-series ;)

I understand, but just because your rich doesn't mean the poorer guy is not allowed to have weather sealing or live view or whatever features and miss out on life. You could easily sell you PRO camera and buy 4 x 40D's and not feel as bad.

I love Canon for allowing me to see what it is to live like a pro without forking out all that ridiculous cash for a camera. You can buy a used car for the price of that 1d.

A 40D is far from being baaad as a 1D but close in some ways. Its mostly lacking the 1D "LOOK AT ME, I'M A PRO" image it portrays. Thats what costs the other $5000.

Hey look at my Ferrari with 450HP. So? Look at my Supercharged Camaro with 500HP (and saves himself $100 000. ;)

As good as the sealing on the 1 series is its still no guarantee. We all want it and Im sure it holds up to slight to moderate rain but if your using a MkIII, 70-200 IS L and a 580MkII in a down pour and it all fries out its your tough luck. I want the sealing in the 40D mostly for light drizzle and for when I go to Oklahoma to shoot sand sports. Ive taken my 20D to the dunes the last 3 years and am always weary about the super fine sand thats being blown through the air. After 20 minutes shooting my gear is covered with a light red film of sand and needs to be cleaned off before any lens changes or even opening the CF door to change cards.

60D, Canon 18-135 IS, Sigma 10-20 hsm, 24-70 2.8 hsm, 70-200 2.8 hsm, 430EX II, and all the other stuff that goes along with it.

I feel the same way but about the 5Dmk2. It will also have the 14bit and Digic III but the only thing to differentiate it from the 40D will be the full frame. Hopefully they have some other stand out features like ISO6400.

40D and 1D 3 are totally different animals. they share some features doesn't mean they are on the same level. it's what behind the spec sheet makes the difference

1D buyers won't because 40D has a 3" screen and live view to buy a 40D instead of 1D (although they may get a 40D in addition of 1D as a backup body ;)). when 40D user are ready, they will still buy a 1D. that's just what they are designed for, and that's how they will work.

if you blame Canon for that, than Nikon will gradually take over the market with this kind of marketing and we Canon users will have no Canon to buy eventually

I believe you severely misinterpreted my financial status. I am an 18 year old college freshman that has worked his ass off for the camera
