Go out in the rain, sit at the sidelines of a footy match for 2 hours shooting 2,000 frames at full burst and see how may matches you go to before the 40D breaks.

Yes, the 'feature-trickle' is the thing in the electronics market nowadays. Good for those who haven't bought anything yet, bad for those who have.

Now you can get a Nokia 6500 with most of the N80's (released a few years back) features for 1/2 the price. Of course, there are still the differentiator features such as WiFi.

Same goes with cameras. However, even the old 1 series have things which the current 40D doesn't such as the numerous custom functions, very high FPS (even the 'ancient' 1D has 8 FPS...what about the 40D..wha? only 6.5 FPS), dual memory card slot, shutter durability etc.

The 1D Mark III is a better camera than the XXD ones, just that the 40D has narrowed the gap slightly. A few distinct advantages of the 1D III are gone, but there are still many left.

Look on the brightside:
-1D III has lower noise
-1D III has 10 FPS vs 6.5 FPS
-1D III has CF+SD slots, more external button controls
-1D III has better weather sealing
-1D III has more AF points, faster AF
-1D III can handle more data (eg 3 seconds of RAW burst vs 2.5 seconds)
-1D III is rated for 300,000 shutter cycles, 40D only 100,000
-1D III has double the battery life of the 40D
-1D III has a built-in battery grip; no need to shell out cash for one
-1D III has a lot more custom functions
-1D III was released earlier so it gets into your hands faster. You got the 1D III and already using it. The 40D requires a 1-2 month wait
-etc..etc..

It wasn't long ago that people were saying "Why should I get a 30D when I can get an XTi for a little over half the price!?!? After all, it has the same AF and more megapickles!"

;)

And 1/2 the people last week were complaining that the 40D rumours didn't give them enough 1D style features, now people are saying it has too many!

Exactly... When I bought my second DSLR (20D) three years ago, I decided it was time to get rid of some of my film gear. I gave two Minolta X-700 outfits to the local high school, and sold my two Canon EOS A2 bodies. Which film camera did I keep? My EOS-1... Why? Because it had a much more robust build than the A2. I figured if I ever lost my hammer I could use it to nail things... :D

Exactly what I did. I had a 1 and a 1n. I kept the 1n and recently gave the 1 to a friend of mine that will shoot the film spool out of it. It's worth not too much now and I would rather see it go down shooting rather than sitting on my shelf.

One should never buy a product when it is first released.

Am I missing something? Is the 40D weather sealed?

No need to gripe, this also means that the next 1D is going to have some significant improvements as well.

If Im not mistaken, only the data door and the battery door are weathersealed... Hmmm, not a HUGE xD guru but dont they also have a lens O-Ring to help make it weatherproof?

If that is the case, I think people are reading into the whole "WEATHERSEALED" thing alittle too much and going to go get a 40D and run out in the puddles and cry when it stops working.

like I said, not an "EXPERT" on the xD's, only have played with them about a half a dozen times...

I believe the weather sealed "L" lens carries the O ring to seal the lens mount.

60D, Canon 18-135 IS, Sigma 10-20 hsm, 24-70 2.8 hsm, 70-200 2.8 hsm, 430EX II, and all the other stuff that goes along with it.

See, I had the understanding that the BODY it self had to be weatherproofed around the lens before it would be worth anything. Basically your saying I can slap my 70-200L 2.8 on ANY camera and it will be weatherproofed where it meets up???

I think them calling it WEATHERPROOFED is a ploy to get us to buy it more.... I dont see this thing being very weatherproofed... it doesn't say anything about where about the lens mount being weather proofed and the pop up flash area... I would think that would be a hard area to weatherproof... BUT I could be wrong too... Im not an engineer...

Go out in the rain, sit at the sidelines of a footy match for 2 hours shooting 2,000 frames at full burst and see how may matches you go to before the 40D breaks.

Most people using a 40D in those conditions would use a rain cover, so the weather wouldn't be much of a factor. Similarly, most people shooting a 1D3 would also be using a rain cover because of the sad experiences too many people have had from relying on the weather proofing. If you look after your equipment both cameras will last a lot longer than 2,000 frames.

"with upgraded dust and weather resistant construction, particularly around the camera's connection ports, battery compartment and single-slot compact flash memory card door"

weather RESISTANT. not weather PROOF. plan accordingly :)
