I think you defused the situation splendidly and avoided tangling with somebody who has really nothing much to lose. There is no sense risking a fight with nutjobs, especially when you are 1) on vacation, 2) with family 3) carrying expensive equipment. If the situation came to blows, even if you win, you will surely be dirtied up, with flecks of silver all over you, and will be spending the better part of the day in a police station filing charges. Vacation ruined, and camera possibly spirited away by an enterprising kibitzer. Pio

There's no such thing as bad publicity and the law would do nothing as he didn't threaten to do anything, just made statements and expressed his opinion. I think you would also find the local police know him very well. Also I agree with another poster that it's all part of the act.....interesting how many people here would have responded with violence, bet I can guess who would end up in goal. Ultimately that's the chance you take when you shoot on the street, nasty surprises sometimes happen. I was quite intimidated. I have filmed with large cameras. But thats easier than pointing a camera and clicking. I was worried someone was going to smack me in the face. I was discrete and the pictures were great. With a 5D and a 70-200L 2.8 IS, I felt a bit exposed! Probably talking about this sticky from the top of the forum: Kenny A. Chaffin

And better story -- and cheers to you for not backing down (but using good judgement)...I LOVE urban shots and when confronted I also find that being assertive works best -- lots of people think you are easily intimidated...I would NEVER delete a shot - or let anyone close enough to my camera (or me) to see the LCD...that is just so beyond a "normal" shot -- awesome!! As a former photo journalist and now a father of two wonderful girls, in retrospect, I realize that no shot is worth one's life or limb. Personally, I would have just kept on walking until I found a cop ... but I wasn't there and you made a call which worked for you ... kept you out of harms way and you still have the image and your MKIII intact. - Unsharp At Any Speed -

I know for a fact that at one point he was banned from Millennium park and moved his act to the EL stations for a while. Thanks for looking!
