Unfortunately, most of these guys react that same way when you take their picture. I've had the same thing happen to me in San Francisco and Hawaii, but I'm a pretty big guy so it didn't last long. These people perform for $$$ and feel that anything that includes them should involve getting paid. No one is going to tell me who I can and can't take a picture of in a public place.

I know from experience, the Tin Man is Touchy! And he kind of sucks at dancing. Maybe it's the old age :(

HaHa! I love Chicago.....mainly for the architecture, not the performers!

I'm off there in April, was going to buy a 17-40 for the trip but i think i'll get a 70-200 instead and keep my distance.

2 Samuel 9:7-8, "So David said to him, “Do not fear, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father’s sake, and will restore to you all the land of Saul your grandfather; and you shall eat bread at my table continually.” Then he bowed himself, and said, “What is your servant, that you should look upon such a dead dog as I?”

Well done! It seems to me most people on the street that challenge us are not concerned about us taking a picture but they never got payed for it. I guess you could ask first and then decide if it is worth paying for the shot.

Interesting story. I don't like confrontations like that so I tend to stay away from taking pictures on the street to avoid conflict even though I love to do it.

Those silver statue guys are a dime a dozen in S.F. They've been around for years.

Also, even if it's legal to photograph someone in a public place, I think it's only common courtesy to ask first. A lot of people are uncomfortable having their pic taken. There's law, and then there's morals.

You are totally correct, about the fact that law doesn't cover everything. But these guys in the street are trying to gather attention, therefore the normal respect of personal privacy doesn't apply to them. It's all about money. They will let you take a picture, if you pay. If you don't pay, they shout so to scare you. It's actually a small extorsion.
To the OP, you did the right thing. An even better thing would have been to call the cops.

looks like a skinny crackhead. agreed, too bad about the bullseye composition! This pic could have been epic. I'd prolly just take the pic and start walking quickly down the street. If he gets in your face avoid him and keep walking or run him over. JMHO
