Dragonfly with Reversed lens

Bought an old 24mm f1.8 FD lens on EBAY and used a reversing ring to get the following two shots. This dragonfly was found in our camper early in the morning. I took a few shots of him and then moved him outside in a tissue. To my surprise he stayed put for nearly an hour of handling and shooting. After I finished, I left him alone and he was gone when I returned. I used the onboard flash and moved the aperture lever to stop down to f22 after focusing (human zoom).

Notice the 'spikes' on his wing? Any idea on what they do?

Silent flight? I never hear them "buz" like a Bumble bee or Hornet. Maybe they are similar to an owl. Owls have small pin feathers on the edge of the wings to make their flight almost silent making them very stealth when hunting. Where as most diving ducks, Canvasbacks, Scaup, the feathers are VERY tight on the lead and trailing edge of the wings and as such, they sound like jets when they cup their wings to cut or to maneuver to land.

I've seen several reversed lens pics and haven't been impressed with some of them but the first of these is rather good. I have no idea about those spikes though.

With regard to the 'spikes' that you can see on the wings, I would imagine that because of the magnification you have there, they are probably part of the vein - I am not aware that they have actual 'spikes' on their wings.
