:lol: I think IS is Canon's marketing ploy to try and get people to regularly buy the newest available lens. Next they will be introducing the UIS... (Updated Image Stabiliser)... then perhaps the NIUIS... (New Improved Updated Image Stabiliser).

Don't think Nikon are a threat though coz it costs too much to junk all your kit and to start all over.

and don't forget.... "If you can....Canon can?

I think they just split it up into 18-55 and 55-200 because that way they can:

1. Get people to buy 2 lenses (at $200 each, that's $400)
2. Sell people on being able to switch lenses. If you have everything in one lens, why switch... At least that would be what a DSLR newbie would ask...

I suspect the 18-55IS will kill sales of the 17-85IS though.

At that price point it will certainly kill sales of the 17-85.

i disagree. unlike the 18-200VR which is a consumer lens, these two kit lenses come with soft builds and plastic mounts. it will be appealing for the newbies, but for the more discerning buyer, there's no way these will do. plus, as they're kit lenses, i doubt there's much quality in them too.

...well, if canon ever DOES make a 18-200 IS, it isn't going to be just $400, and I doubt the 55-250 IS comes to market at $200 either. I think the 18-55 might sneak in under $250, but $200 for the 55-250 is damn optomistic.
