You notice how the peacock feather is sharper in the one photo? I think you nailed focus on it.

Suggestions...hmm.

Try a narrower aperture if possible. Something like f/7.1 (i think thats a real f-number hehe). That will help keep more in focus if you happen to just barely be missing it. Try a wider anger but a closer position to your face and then crop. The wider the angle, the less telephoto compression and the larger the Depth of Field.

Also if you use the center focus point only, then you can just point the lens at your face and if you get the reflection if your eye in the middle of the front element of the lens, then it should be over the center focus point. Then just focus away. That's all I know.

Good lucks! ;-)a

That's the weird thing, I wanted the peacock feather to be in focus aswell as the eyes, if i wanted my eyes alone in focus then the peacock feather wouldn't be there lol! I was really shakey when taking the pictures, i was holding the camera and didn't use a tripod or anything.

Wow, that sounds pretty helpful, i'll try that tomorrow. Thanks :D

No prob! ;-)a The narrower aperture should help then. Also the wider angle. In macro lenses you notice the effect you are getting a lot more prominently. It is due to telephoto compression. You end up with a VERY VERY shallow/narrow Depth of Field.

I should purchase a macro lens then right?

No no! (Well yea! They are awesome!)

What I was saying though, is that lenses such as macro lenses cause you to NOT be able to have multiple things such as the feather AND your eyes in focus. The same happens with higher zoom settings on lenses. Called telephoto compression.

Use your lens with a wider angle (less mm value) and a narrower aperture and you should be able to get your eyes and the feather in focus.

this is also a good link, that demonstrates what alpha is talking about...you can plug in numbers and it will show you how much DOF you'll be able to get http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html (external link)

also i noticed that your pictures say flash fired...are you just using the on-board flash for these?

i have to say i'm surprised how well you did focus without using a tripod

Yes i used the built in flash, i was in the back yard at about 4pm when the sun was setting so it wasn't too bright, i decided to use the flash and that was the outcome.

Thanks for the link :D
