Hello all, inline with my 20th birthday yesterday, I decided to do my first selfportrait. I added textures , cracks and stains to have the rugged element.

Excuse my fugliness though. I dont know if I should post the original picture in which you guys can clearly make out the reflection of the mirror.

This was shot with my Canon 30D 70-200 2.8 at 135mm 1/250th F11 with the main light putting out F11 through a 53" Octa and the kick light set 1 and 6/10th stops below the main through a small softbox and a 4'x6' white reflector panel to through a little light on the dark side. The negative space was expanded to the left in PS other than that the shot is pretty much straight out the camera just sharpen and monochrome setting in DPP. Hope this helps.

Thanks so much for the explanation. Do you mind if I save this info instead of looking for it in this thread. This could really help me. Was all that equipment expensive?

Great minds think alike, Damian. :)

...Except I don't have a hair/rim light. Just futzing around with my recently-purchased but very under-used B800 last night in an effort to avoid going to sleep, and got this shot which actually came out pretty cool.

Anyway, I kind of liked it, in a minimalist sort of way.

Go right ahead and for the gear the studio lights are new and were around $1700 thats the Elinchrom BXRi 500 to go kit that has the stands cases and 2 small softboxes and I added the Elinchrom 53" Octa to that. Certainly not the cheapest rout you can go but the strobes are excellent and have the built in skyports and the kit comes with the transceiver. I really like the Elinchrom system they have a great range of top notch modifiers and a great range of monoblocks and pack head systems I really like the fact that it is a system I will never outgrow. But all this has been descussed at length in the Studio Lighting section.

Wouldn't it just make life so much more easier? I can just imagine using pink and purple flash gels to give my self portraits a pinky look ;)

Buy one ;) I'm gonna save up for one too. I've found one for a bargain.
