Although I've been traveling the NASCAR circuit since 2001, I only started traveling a camera full time in 2005. Along the way, I've tried to find different ways to shoot myself to cap off each season's gallery (external link):

Jay, that may be one of the best car mirror shots I have ever seen.

Took a while for folks to get used to me with a camera. At first it was always "Oh Man, not that camera again..." but eventually it became "Jay! Got your camera handy? You gotta see this...!"

IMO, if you scan each year, you can see that the headshots and "backstage peeks" get a little more intimate and (I hope) a lot better quality as well.

Welcome to POTN Lucy, and nice self portrait.

Looks like the focal point was on the back off your wrist instead of your face. Try a center weighted focus, or a higher F-stop. Again, welcome aboard! :)

I find it hard to focus a self portrait myself and would love some advice. I'm not sure how center weighted focus would help for a subject that isn't there until after the focus has been set and the timer initiated.

I'm certainly NO expert on the subject David, but I can toss out a few ideas. Perhaps other folks with more experience will chime in.

1) Look for your own reflection in the lens. If you can, it's probably close.

2) Use a mirror behind the camera. I've done this and it works pretty well.

3) If you have Live View - use a mirror behind the camera slightly angled so that you can see the LCD, and where your face is positioned.

4) Buy one of these (https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=741919) for $30. I just got mine, and I love it. A million times faster than using the timer. Then you can "spray and pray". With 100+ shots or so, one of them will probably be centered and look correct.

Anyone else have any good ideas?

Cheers.
