With the mention of quieter mirror slap and a quiet mode for live view shooting in the 40D, I wonder if Canon have incorporated a 1D(s)II-style "quiet shutter" mode? It really should've been called "quiet mirror" mode, since it delays the return of the mirror when taking a shot, and basically has nothing to do with the shutter. Anyway, on the 1D(s)II this was activated via Personal Function, and on the 1D(s)III it's an actual drive mode. I don't see a 1D(s)III-style "Silent Mode" drive mode or anything similar for the 40D, but I wonder if maybe they've put it in a 40D custom function similar to the 1D(s)II? Or is the quiet mode just for live view? A PDF of the manual or a whitepaper would probably clear this up, but since neither are available right now has anybody read anything that mentions such a feature?

Not sure if this helps. However from my experience with the old 1Ds Classic, yes, the feature is activated as a personal function. It takes effect only when the drive mode is single-frame shooting. When continuous shooting is selected as the drive mode, the personal function is over-ridden (even if activated) and the camera shoots as if the function were not present.

As such, whether the feature is present as a drive mode or as a personal function, they should work in a similar fashion, and during single-frame shooting only.

If i am not mistaken the "quiet shutter" is a new design rather than an older version. DPreview says this in the "What's New" tab:

Faster and quieter mirror mechanism
One of the more noticeable improvements when you first use the EOS 40D (apart from the larger viewfinder) is the much quicker and quieter mirror mechanism. Instead of relying on a spring to lift the mirror it is now motorized in both directions (and hence damped). This makes for much shorter blackout times and a quieter overall shutter release sound.

Yeah, I knew about the quieter overall mechanism, which is nice because the 20D's shutter/mirror sound is louder and more noticeable than the 10D's was. The reason I was wondering if there's a custom function or something on the 40D to enable Quiet Shutter like on the 1DII is because in Live View on the 40D there's something called a Silent Shooting mode where the mirror return is delayed, which to me sounds a whole lot like the Quiet Shutter setting on the 1DII.
