Don't know how this will affect anyone who has pre-ordered with the 28-135, but Amazon now lists the kit as having the EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom Lens and still listed as $1499.99. My guess is that some orders are about to be cancelled by Amazon!

I doubt it. They'll just give the people what they already paid for.

As for purchasing a "kit lens," I'd buy body only, since neither of these lenses are up to par with what I already have. From what I've read so far, the image stabilizer on the new kit lens is a cheap one, unlike the IS on some of the higher priced lenses.

I can't really understand why the 28-135 was considered a kit lens in the first place. 28 mm on an APS-C sensor is not wide angle at all.

Not paid for till item shipped. If Canon has changed the kit offering, I doubt that Amazon would eat a $200 price difference on the two lenses by making up thier own kit.

I would not have ordered the kit either, unless I was planning on selling the 28-135mm lens. That being said...if I had pre-ordered with the 28-135mm, I would certainly be cancelling if my order if it was changed to the plastic mount 18-55mm worth $200 less...

If they do, which I doubt, I'm sure they'll contact the purchasers. I've never known Amazon to screw over their customers.

And I can't understand why they offered the 28-135 either, unless it's just because it's a consumer lens with IS and a good range. I think Best Buy was offering this lens with the 30D for a while.

I read somewhere that canon has an over abundance of the 28-135 and thats why it's being bundled as a kit lens on the 40d and 30d.

Nope. Depends on what you pre-ordered. There is a body only for $1300 and we all know the 18-55 IS is $200.

Typically, they (Amazon) can easily get away with the "Not responsible for typographical errors" plot.

Don't blame Amazon until blame is due.

Interesting. The 18-55 IS USM isn't to be released until November, so I thought the 28-135 might have been a (rather strange) stop gap. Looks like it will be available earlier in the kit - which makes sense. On balance, depending on the build and optical quality of the new lens, those not intending to sell the 28-135 on immediately would probably be happier with the 18-55. Let's hope the quality control is better on the 18-55 IS than the current kit lens.
