I was inspired by a friend on another forum and his bee shot, so I went and bought a 4 X close-up filter for one of my lenses. Nice and cheap at £4.99 off e-bay.

This is one of my first efforts, much harder to do than I thought, but I think this will be a fun purchase.

Nice shot! I just wonder what the "4x" really mean.......as it doesn't seem to mean 4x life size......unless this hoverfly is tiny. I think the IQ is accepatable for the price of £4.99. :)

you are falling prey to the lures of macro photography .... try looking for reverse mount rings and cheaper FD lenses (or any other for that matter) and you can get in way closer for less than $20. I got mine on EBAY.

I think 4X just means your minimum focusing distance for your lens is 4X less.
I used it on a Tamron AF 55-200mm F/4-5,6 Di II LD which has minimum focusing distance of .95m (3 feet) with the filter it's 9 inches.

NeutronBoy. I have heard of this method, I'll have to check ebay and find out more, or just buy a Canon EF 180mm f/3.5 L USM Macro :lol:

Another from the same set, you can really see how the cheap filter spoils any chance of good IQ, with some bad fringing on this one.

I prefer your second shot also and like Brian says save up as you will get hooked like the rest of us and before long you will want for better equipment. :-)
