why isn’t anyone disappointed by the 1.6 focal magnification of the 40D ?

I thought that this was a phase that canon will overcome; now it seem that it’s become a new standard and everybody is happy with it. I am stepping down to 40D from 5D, so this will also mean I will lose my wide angle lenses in the process

why would anyone..its the same crop as the 20D and 30D..this was the next gen camera of that series. I dont think anyone expected anything but a 1.6

Why is a 1.6 crop factor a bad thing? There are lenses that will allow the same FOV. But, when you need some reach do you want a 5D and longer lens or 40D and shorter lens? The latter is much cheaper and yields great results.

Did you really think Canon was designing and manufacturing EF-S lenses for just one body? If the 40d went 1.3 or full-frame, that would leave just the XTi for EF-S sales.

One of Canon's assets is the ability to choose sensor size. There are plenty of reasons why choice is a good thing. You can always step up to the 1Ds MK-3. Or wait and see if Canon updates the 5d.

The 40d was never meant to be full frame. I see many threads on this full frame crap for the non pro bodies. I'm not sure where it comes from. Most likely not understanding economics or how the Canon system is structured.

Crop cameras are here to stay since people think "reach" or "longer lenses" are the benefits. When I had my 1Ds Mk.1 I could crop my images to match a 1D Mk.II pefectly and peopel said to me - "Why not get a crop camera for a longer reach?" Uh, I can just crop my images to where I want and get that "reach".

The 40d purchase will just make you think 10-22 and you can also use a great lens I wish wasn't EF-S, the 17-55 IS. The 40D is a great camera in my books.

people will always try to stop you doing the right thing if it is unconventional
Full frame and some primes.

Because of the advantage for long lens! That's why I didn't buy a 5D!

I just ordered my 40D!:D:D:D:D:D

Nota Bene: Focal magnification?

There is no camera capable of doing that, there is no such thing.
Cropped cameras have Field of View Crop Factor, but focal length of the lens is always the same - sensor size doesn’t change it a bit..

I couldn't care less that the 40D isn't FF - I love my 10-22. ;)

i may well sell my 5d for a 40d as i think the iq will be very close also the 40d does have a few things that will be nice -im not really a wide angle guy but very much into super teles so the 1.6 crop + higher IQ and 6fps are well worth having as i have 1.3 crop anyway and that works ok for my 17mm on the wide end.

1.6 is not a phase and not something Canon is trying to overcome. It allows for cheaper sensors, and smaller, lighter, cheaper lenses. You want larger get a 5 or 1. Where did you get the idea it was a phase?

I was not at all surprised, especially given that they introduced a new EF-S lens at the same time. (And I was really disappointed that it was an EF-S, too). I think it is one of Canon's strengths that they offer a variety of sensor sizes to fit into different niches.

There's something for everyone, I guess. Cameras with a crop factor have their pros and cons, as do FF cameras.

By 'downgrading' from a 5D to a 40D, you don't necessarily lose the ability to take wide angle photos. Yes, you'd have to shop for wider lenses and look into those that were specially made by crop cameras. But once you do that, it'll be possible to mimic a similarly wide FOV that you were getting on the 5D. That is unless of course, you were using a Sigma 12-24mm on your 5D.

Same here!
I don’t see crop factor as much of a disadvantage..

I also do not see the crop factor as an issue. I have both a 1.6 crop and a FF camera. Both do their jobs wonderfully and each has their place. There is enough room in the digital world to support multiple sensor sizes.
