Hey everyone,

Just got a few questions on the 350d and 30/40d.

1. Whats the resolution power on the 350d? How many bits?

2. Is there much difference in image quality between the 350d and the 30d?

3. Much difference in the level on noise between the two?

4. Does the 30d focus noticably faster and more accurate than the 350d?

I've probably got more quesstions that ive forgot but i'll add em here if i remember, and i searched abit and have gotten some of the answers i just want to confirm.

Thanks

Of course you can change the XT to an XTi and make it

  • 12bits
  • no
  • no
  • no

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

I know someone with an XT and my 30ds high iso performance is better (iso 800+ slightly noticeable at 400)

I've got all three....XT, XTi and a couple of 30D's

I think the 30D and XTi have the focus speed advantage,
The 30D and XT win the noise stakes.
The 30D wins the features stakes
The XTi is my preffered macro camera (handheld)

Pro's and con's for each of them but the 30D takes the honors if you're panning with longer L's mounted...the others can't compete there.

Bob...all IMHO, of course

thought i dig up this thread rather than start another.

Just want to make sure the peripheral focus points on the 30d dont go cross sensitive at any f. stop, correct?

I know its on here some where i just cant find it.

I think you mean you just want to use the center focus point alone when using an f2.8 or faster lens.

Oh, I see. As I recall...

The 300D and 350D/XT have no high precision focus points.

The 400D/XTi and 30D have one high precision focus point - the center point - which adds high precision focus when used with lenses of f2.8 or faster. "Additionally, the center AF point has a vertical-line sensitive sensor compatible with f/5.6. Therefore, cross-type focusing is possible with any EF lens." (http://www.robgalbraith.com …Rebel_XTi_White_Paper.pdf (external link))

The 40D has "9 cross-type sensors, and world's first diagonal high-precision cross-type AF at center point with f/2.8 and faster lenses". (from http://www.usa.canon.com …39&modelid=15653&pageno=3 (external link)) According to dpreview:

A key advancement of the EOS 40D is its new 9-point cross-type AF system. All nine AF points can achieve focus on both horizontal and vertical planes. A central AF point is capable of accurate focusing up to aperture f/2.8, with eight outer points working up to f/5.6.

Hmmm

350D and 30D have different Sensors. 30D 8.2 eff 350D 8.0!'

30D has a slight advantage in noise control over the 350D

30D is far better build!

30D Has more usefull features!

30D has faster and more accurate focus!

A lot of people think that the CMOS sensor is the same... but thats a mistake!

And yes you can make a lot of good pictures with the 350D and 30D!

The sensor could well be the same one, Canon have cut down the pixels on the 350D compared to the 30D.

350D = 3456 x 2304 = 7.96MP
30D = 3504 x 2336 = 8.19 MP

In the real world I found no image difference, although 30D noise control seems better.

30D AF is lightyears ahead of the 350D.

The Sensor is not the same....
They both have the same dimensions but the 30D has a higher pixel density!
A different isolation of the pixel to improve the higher ISO Expansion and
better ISO (high) performance.
You cant just turn of a bunch of pixels to go from 8.2 tot 8.0 MP!

Correct. The only cross-type AF sensor on the 30D is the center point. The others are either horizontal or vertical.
