New from B&H just over a month ago.

Forgive the quality/size but is this lens back focussing in your opinion?

Only tried this test after finding that when focussing really close up say on a flower stamen that the petals behind were sharper.

These are both at F2.8 #1 is @ 24mm #2 is @27mm

Hard to tell since your shots are too far out.

Two things. If you are going to use that test, follow the instructions to the letter. Also, there is a mnimum focusing distance for that lens. If you are too close to the flower you get the flowers behind, it is because you have exceeded the closest distance.

I've been using AF when doing this, and if I get too close it won't lock on. Back up a bit and I get the AF beep and that's when I get the petals sharp and not the stamen. All looks fine in the viewfinder at point of shoot?

I only used this as scenario as an extreme example. I have had some reservations about other pix too in that the point of focus is just tantalizingly OOF in the resulting image. Hence the test attempt.

I think its slightly out, but not enough to worry me if it was mine.

I've tested my own 24-70L f/2.8 very recently using a 12 inch ruler and got results that seem to indicate that the sharpest focus varies very slightly at different zoom settings - back focus at 24mm to front focus at 70mm. Thats all at f/2.8 of course.

I almost never use f/2.8 so tend to have more DOF to play with.
