Am I the only one excited about this? A precision focus screen like we used to have on our film SLR's. When I first saw the review on the 40D, that's the only thing that excited me. It turns the xt, xti, 20d and 30d into a 'real' SLR without the cost of the 5d or 1d. Why am I the only one excited about this? Has anyone seen these focus screens and are they really good?

I'm excited. I have one in my 1 series and for others to have easier access to these it's a big deal.

people will always try to stop you doing the right thing if it is unconventional
Full frame and some primes.

I think it's an excellent idea and I'm very pleased they implemented this in the XXD series.

Wait...."precision focus screen" is not a split prism screen. Canon has only made split screens for the 1D series. They do not make them for the 5D even.....so having grown up with split screens.....I went out and got a 3rd party one.

If Canon does have a split screen for the 40D.....I'm going to cry! And then hope that the new 5D is coming around soon;):D

More precise manual focusing with a split prism screen...or auto focusing, then fine tuning the focus by hand. Hopefully they make one...

Canon 1DMKIII, 7D w/WFT-E5A, 40D modded with Baader filter, Celestron CPC1100, Astro-Tech AT8RC on a Celestron CGEM, some fast lenses, and some tripods...

a precision screen is not the same thing as split prism. Here is an example of a precision screen. Basically, it's like the regular one, but a bit more contrast that's supposed to help with MF. Not nearly as good as a real split prism though, IMHO......but there's the 3rd party ones around!

BTW, Amazon does list what screens will be available for the 40D....nope, no split prism. But third party ones aren't hard to find.

Viewfinder focus screen: New interchangeable "Ef" series focusing screens; standard screen: Ef-A--precision matte screen very similar to EOS 30D; optional Ef-D screen--precision matte with grid lines; optional Ef-S screen--Super precision matte (superior manual focusing with fast lenses, f1.8 to f2.8)

I know what a split prism screen is ;). I misread the post above mine and thought he was asking about the split prism which is why I edited my post before you replied. I had read your post right before I read his and had split prism on the brain...sorry for the confusion.

I own a fair few manual lenses, so I'm quite excited with the optimised for manual focus screen. I'm also sure third parties will come out with suitable split-focus screens to.

Cheers

Matt

How easy is it to change these screens? Are they DIY? Esp with these digital cameras....

The canon service center in my city charges INR 2,500 (~ 60 USD) as the bare minimum price for digital cameras - thats the minimum u gotta pay, incase you are asking them to do something that is not covered under warranty.

So paying 40USD to purchase a screen and another 60 USD to change....

Cheers
