I would appreciate your comments - I will be using this for taking pictures of kids, games, performances by kids, landscape and nature. Please comment on the following choices I came up with:

With the 40D - buy the kit lens (28-135 IS USM) and add a 100-400 L IS USM?

Or buy 40D body only and buy 17-85 EF-S USM + 70-200 L IS USM?

My first post - renewed enthusiasm in photography with the introduction of the EOS 40D:)

I would do.......

40D + 18-55 IS

40D + 28-135 IS

40D + 70-200 IS

but probably 40D + 10-22

Your lens selection will vary depending on your style and subject of photography. I use three different combinations of lenses, depending on what I am doing.

For general photography with an emphasis on sports and/or low light conditions I take the EF-S 10-22, EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 and EF 70-200 f/2.8

For general photography with an emphasis on nature and wildlife I take the EF-S 10-22, EF-S 17-55 and Sigma 50-500 (and a tripod).

For travel and hiking where the emphasis is on light weight and compact I take the EF-S 10-22, EF-S 17-55 and EF 70-300 DO.

With any of those combinations, if I think I can do without ultra-wide angle and want to restrict myself to two lenses I leave the 10-22 at home.

These are the combinations that work for me. Yours, and everybody else's will probably be different.

Since you are considering the 100-400L, it looks like you are not too limited in terms of budget, so here's what I'd advise:
1) Don't bother with any of the kit lenses.
2) Get an EF 50/1.8 on general principles (or if you have lots of cash, the 1.4)
3) The EF-S 10-22 for your landscape work, but if you are ever intending to go full frame, consider the 17-40 instead
4) The 24-105 F4L IS as your normal "walk around" lens (some might prefer the 24-70 2.8)
5) The 70-200 F4L IS, unless you really need the 2.8 version
6) A 1.4x teleconverter to give you enough length for a lot of animal photography.
7) If you are wanting to image small birds in the distance, you'll need a longer lens - maybe the 400mm
8) If you are into "small" nature, the 100 mm 2.8 macro.

If you are happy with the 1.6 crop and want a single lens, many swear by the EFS 17-55 2.8; if you may go full frame, I'd take the 24-105.

Definitely the 17-55 IS if budget is not a problem. If you need reach, there are many considerations but one of the 70-200 Ls is a good choice. Pick a speed based on your needs. If you want to travel I would look at one of the 70-300 IS lenses, either the DO or non-DO.
