Really REALLY make me sick! So I stopped by the local camera store today to get a new eyecup for my 1d since it flew off during my last job and there was a gentleman there that REALLY pushed my buttons.

He was asking the lady at the counter if the 1dmk3 was the newer version of his camera. She said, "well, maybe, what do you have?"
and his response "I dont know, its that one with....11 pixels i think? The big one."
Her: I dont know which one you're talking about. Do you have it with you?
Him: Oh yeah, let me go grab it. *leaves*

Shortly he returns from his car with a 1dsmk2, with a DESTROYED 50mmF1.4(huge specs of who knows what on the lens, no cap, no filter, looked like he played hockey with it).

People like that make me cry. Why do you spend thousands of dollars on something and know absolutely nothing about it? And on top of that, treat it like crap!

kinda like people spend thousands of dollars on a car and then go have a mechanic fix it when they could learn themselves. I guess it just wasnt important to him.
I know how ya feel, I see someone like this and I think to myself...well let me have the money like (s)he has and I would know exactly what to do with it.

But thats how it goes...earn money spend money.

Its funny you mention that deadpass, i thought i should have offered him my mk2n for a straight up trade, and he honestly probably would have considered it. If the employee wasnt standing around I would have, she seemed like she was protecting him from ridicule.

no doubt about the car thing too. That bothers me also.

Someone probably told him it was the best, and that some people prefer the 50mm fov. He's a rich man, and he listens. Bad combo.

People like him help keep the cameras from selling for way more.

Why? What do you care?

If he's got that type of money, then obviously he's doing something right and isn't as stupid as you think he is.

Isn't that like compaining that I throw away leftover food when there are starving children in the world?

Another example...There are those who wax their cars every weekend. Then there are people like myself who own a pretty nice nice SUV but wash it once a year. Ouch for the waxers, doesn't bother me one bit..well unless I had a huge chunk of bird crap on my windshield that my wiper can't dislodge.:D

Some things are just more important to me than washing cars.

Obviously, to this guy, some things were more important that his "big camera" and thrashed 50mm 1.4.

Funny though...wish I had that kind of money to kill!

it bothers me because I bust my ass everyday just to barely get by so its aggrivating when people treat their stuff like crap. To me it shows a total disregard for what those people have. Just because he has money doesnt make him smart. I know plenty of complete morons that are loaded. Its funny you mention the vehicle thing because his lexus SUV that he pulled the camera out looked like it hadnt ever been taken care of either. I was taught to take pride in what I have no matter what and not to take things for granted. When i was younger I had a busted old car, i still took good care of it. Since then ive been fortunate enough to improve. Sure my last 2 cars probably cost together what his one lexus suv cost but i would rather die then let them leave my garage looking like it had been to hell and back.

Im not saying im a saint or anything like that, i throw away food to but im not going to boast about it. I just think that kind of attitude is terrible. He surely is entitled to have his big camera, but even if its just a toy to him, its not something that should be abused and thrown around I think. I think it also has to do with lazyness, it takes what, 10 seconds to put your lens cap on and stick it in a bag, and what, 5 minutes to go through a drive through car wash? Is your time so precious that people cant do that?

Just my opinion though, it doesnt really matter

Welcome to photography. I've always said that when I get This or That I will baby it and take care of to my best ability, and in 30 years I have only dropped a camera twice that needed repair, and it was in year 24. I don't understand folks who buy the gear and let it sit in the closet. I don't understand those that trash the stuff i covet. Then when I got a little older I learned that it is just stuff. I may never have the 300 400 500 600 all at the same time. But next year I will get the 500. It will probably used too.

He may not understand why we feel the way we do about our gear. I still love my first Minolta Sr7. But it was and is not the best by a long shot. But I shot football with it. I shot surfing, fashion, portraits, band and sunsets and sunrises with it too. I literally wore it out. I begged my Dad for a Canon A-1 and drooled over the slick black brochures every day at work. I got the first one for a HS grad gift. And had to sell it when i went out on my own. It killed me. But I bought 3 more when I could after that. I worked two jobs and shot and joined the Army and saved, and shot. I earned every one and NEVER sold one again to survive. This guy does not have that level of commitment in his heart like you do and so many other really cool folks on this list from all over the world.

You see we have a connection here that surpases EVERYTHING except family. He is not connected he is just an owner. I know by heart the technical specs of nearly every camera I have had the pleasure of owning, and still have many of them. We suffer for what we love, slave away in jobs that don;t understand, bosses that don't care. I have worked for my self for years and have finally gotten somewhere in the last 10.

Do not look upon him for he is an un believer, probably has a NOINK too.
Les

I agree 100%. I was the same way. Though I havent been involved with photography for nearly as long as you(im only 21!) but besides my family and my girlfriend, its the biggest part of my life.

Ill never forget the long hours staring at brochures and catalogs, ive been going to school and working for as long as I can remember to have the things I've got. My accomplishments arent that great but im happy that I can have the photo equipment I have, I was happy when I signed 50,000 of my life away to buy my cars, and im happy that ive learned some lessons along the way.

Who are you to say that this guy doesn't bust his ass everyday?

If you buy it, you have every right to run it over with your car if you so choose.

Then when I got a little older I learned that it is just stuff.

This is exactly it. It's just stuff. Stuff can be replaced, especially when you have the financial means. It's all relative.

My car to me is just a car. It's also a Lexus, but gets no special treatment other than an oil change every once in a while. I park it outside in the rain to wash it. My rottweiler gets the temperature-controlled back seat all to himself. When the car finally dies, I'll get another one. My rottie will get exclusive use of that back seat of that one too.

To this gentleman, the 1DsII was just a camera. What's the big deal? It's not like he was mistreating something that you own and covet.

The nice thing about people that spend money like a drunken Paris Hilton is that they are doing their part to keep your local camera shop in business. A couple of customers like that every week will help ensure that the shop can pay it's taxes, utilities, and wages.
