I am pre-ordering 40D and I’d like to throw in a battery grip as well.
Since I realistically don’t need a new WFT-E3/E3A, BP-E2N, I’d like to go for the old grip that fits both 20D and 30D.

However, in its preview, Dpreview mentioned BP-E2 as compatible model, but neither B&H nor any of Canadian retailers have them in stock – they have only the BG-E2.

Does anyone know whether BG-E2 and BP-E2 are the same?
Is BG-E2 going to fit 40D or should I keep trying to find the BP one?

I would go with the BG-E2N as it is supposedly weather sealed. You would be defeating the camera's weather seal, whatever it is, by putting on the older style grips.

Yes the BG-E2 will work on the 40D.

I would suggest the BG-E2N as it has the weather sealing.

You guys are probably right, but I can't find BP-E2N on the net!
Does anyone know, even approximately, what is going to be the price for that grip?

I think I read it was 250 by one of the posters here. This could be reasonable as the BG-E2 is 169.00 and BH so I'm expecting 200-250.

BG-E2 is $169 at B&H, but it is $300 in Canada!
I can only imagine how much they are going to charge for BP-E2N, here in Canuckland..

Well, I guess I’ll just have to wait until B&H have them in stock..
Thank you all!

I'm thinking that BP-E2 is a typo and should really be BG-E2.

Most likely, since I couldn’t find any reference for BP-E2, at all!

Its BG not BP ?

I hit the buy it now in the 40D accessory section on the canon website and it was $250.00 US in my cart.

Good thing they didn't say PB-E2. While that one's weather sealed, it may be a tad difficult to fit on your 40D... ;)

Okay thanks gdl357, I can live with $250, I guess..

Anyway, I just pre-ordered 40D (body only) from Vistek, Toronto for CAD$1,399.00.
I also ordered 3021BPRO + 488RC2, 85mm f/1.8 and 1.4x extender, from B&H.
With carrying strap and spiked feet for the tripod, hood for the lens and front cap for extender, plus shipping to Canada, it came to US$1032.
BG-E2N will come later, I suppose..

Whish me luck when my wife see credit card statement! ;)

Well it's only the battery compartment door on it that's weather sealed in the same way it's only the CF card door and battery door on the camera that's weather sealed.

Battery Grip BG-E2N
The BG-E2N battery grip replaces the B-E2. The improved grip is weather-resistant and intended to be matched with the weatherproof EOS-40D, launched today. The grip is also reverse compatible with the 30D and 20D. The battery grip can accept one or two BP-511 batteries to double the shooting capacity. The BG-E2N also accepts six AA batteries with an optional tray.

“The BG-E2N is a very versatile accessory that a lot of photographers will prefer,” Westfall said.

The BG-E2N Battery Grip will retail for $270.

Hope this helps

Hey, I understand, my wife is going to shoot me. Luckily the 40D ships on my birthday so maybe my birthday present will truly be the gift of life, meaning she won't kill me. :D

The BG-E2's build quality is ok, but it's biggest problem is how badly it mates to the camera.

Sure weather sealing is good, but i would love to simply get away from the crap fit of my 20D + BG-E2. Of course if they have done it again and produced another bad fitting grip, then i would probably save the cost and use a BG-E2, but with the recall/quality issues they had, I am sure there are a number of improvements.
