I dont think you can look at camera geatr as an investment...especially bodies..argueably lenses, but I dont think bodies would be called an investement....

Unless you are refeing to it making money for you at work...then, maybe, but how mych better is it then your 30D? That remains to be seen...

Would never call a body an investment unless it offered a significant performance advantage for your business. Stick with the 30D and get glass. Would only be considering a 40D if i needed another body or i was moving up from a 300D/350D for instance!

I don't think used digi cameras will be worth much when the new one is available.
No camera can be considered to be an investment - unless it is about 100years old and still working and in mint condition and there is a collector around with too much money. Old digi cameras I think will be particularly valueless. Some old film cameras can be a bit different - my M3 Leica is now worth 8 times what I paid for it in 1960 or thereabouts. But I would not part with it.

Having said that, it will not put me off going from my 30D to a 40D when it becomes available. Think of the extra 2MPix and go for it. Because when you consider cropping an image it's like adding 20 - 25% to the reach of your lens compared with an 8Mpix sensor - if you see what I mean.

Dedicated Canon lenses are for the long term - An investment? - Not generally when in amateur use. I rate an investment as something that will bring me an increasing financial return with time.
