I would imagine that you want to get your shutter speed up, like around 1/200 of a second if your using you external flash. Just a thought. ;)

Good shots- assume this was dead ?
Without knowing the EXIF- looks to me like they were taken at small aperture to get the DOF. Try sacrificing some DOF by shooting around F8-F11 at 1:1 you will get sharper shots because of the reduction in the amount of diffraction softening.

Thanks, I work with it some more tomorrow or this weekend with and w/o the tubes. I was hoping by using the tubes I'd get closer and see more detail but then this may be as good as it gets with a dead bug.

Certainly don't give up on the ext tubes. I only started getting good eye detail in flies when I first started shooting around 1.5:1. I routinely have 33mm of ext tubes on my sigma 105.

Keep on using those tubes, I agree with LordV, the more practice you get the better you will get. I am very jealous because you have both the tubes and the 100mm. I have the tubes but can't afford the 100mm at this time so I rented it and what a mistake that was because now I am going through withdrawals without it. That is a great set up and take some time to get use to it, get the shutter speed up and work on bracing yourself and your camera better.
