I "manually" set my AF point, so basically, I pick the "little red square" that is closest to (to minimize recompisition) or directly on top of my subject's eyes. But the I am using AF, meaning I'm not using the focus ring. Does that make sense?

OK, just wanted to clear up the terminology. You *are* using autofocus.

So I still wonder why I can't see the autofocus points in File Viewer. Can anyone else see 'em?

Is it possible for you to post a 100% crop of the area in the image that you feel is in focus?

I think there is a possibility that something is indeed off.

Okay, so this might answer one of my questions.... as I'm thinking about this, I did start noticing more OOF pictures about the time I started shooting raw. Is this because of the sharpening that my camera was doing for me before when I shot JPEG?

Is it normal for RAW to look slightly OOF until sharpened?

I still think I have other issues, but this might help a little...

Yes, it's to be expected that the RAW image needs sharpening.
I always apply some amount of sharpning in Photoshop...Specificallyt unsharp Mask. That's normal.

Not saying that's the answer here, just that sharpening is normal.

Here's part of the plane - it looks pretty sharp to me, and I know I was not focusing over there...

Again, thanks.

I agree. Looks like it might be mis-firing a bit.

Since this is consistent with both your lenses, perhaps it might be the 20D.(??)

..... this makes me feel both better and worse.... better my focusing skills might not be as sucky as I was starting to think..... worse that I might need to spend $$$....

Do you know, should I try and contact Canon directly? I have never had any service work done before.

Thanks.

While I'm at it, here's an example one of the pink dots I keep getting, in the same spot of each image, this is at 100% crop. Is it dust?

Thanks!

PS. Again... notice the focus? Its crap.

Well, they're not dust on your sensor. Those show up gray. Looks like a sensor problem from here...

I think your link pink dot is a "hot pixel"

I have read a thread somewhere that described a way of correcting this but, alas, not always successful.

Looks like a hot pixel problem you have there.

As for sharpening, you can try to apply some Unsharp Mask (USM) in photoshop...that's what a lot of folks do as part of their routine when shooting Raw.

Yeah, I would call Canon up and maybe get them to calibrate everything. Not sure what can be done about the hot pixel looking thing there...
