since the 1.4 and 2x converters (canon brand) run approximately the same price......why buy the 1.4 over the 2x ?

1 stop light loss through the 1.4x
2 stop light loss through the 2x

Some lenses are fine with either TC and there is no big hit in image quality. Other lenses will not take any TC well at all and others are acceptable with the 1.4x but poor with the 2x.

The choice of which to use comes down to the focal length you wish to achieve, the lens you are using as a base lens, the aperture limitations (loss of light on all lenses and loss of AF on some) and image quality required. Hence, two TC's to chose from.
