hmmm never attempt at capturing a fly inflight. nicely done. both pics are great like the second one with the blur wings motion. there seem to be alot of inflight shot lately. should start a best inflight shot thread.

Well done. You'll have everybody trying this - haven't we all tried it, but rarely get the shot we want?

Oh man, I need to start trying these but they are so damn hard! I'll start with dragonflies - they should be a little easier...

Good one - think Yacine did a similar fly shot a month or two back. I've tried these hovering flies and haven't succeeded in a good shot yet- they always move just out of focus when you point the lens at them.

Great captures.

I'm jealous. Tried a few of these myself, and none came out well. Think I'll stick to hover-flies. At least they stay reasonably still.

Good captures - those little buggers certainly move pretty quickly!

I don't know much about macro photography, but I do find it awesome that you're able to get these shots with a macro lens and a 430EX...I mean, no super-duper-mega rig/mount/etc needed...

Those are great! Makes me want to get a macro lens!

Nice shots, do these flies hover to allow you to get the shots off?

I think the males of this species do hover to attract mates, nice captures either way.

Hi attic..they do hover but they dont stay in one place like hoverflies they are constantly moving and shifting position (which BrianV mentioned in his post) which makes them a nightmare to get the focus sopt on..I spent half an hour for about 7 shots 2 of which were keepers.

I tried again tonight but they wouldnt even let me get near enough to get a shot off.

Alistair.
