I am thinking of getting a tele converter, but have never used one before. My questions are:
1) Using a 5D, will the Canon converters (1.4x and 2x) work with any lens that will fit a 5d, whether Sigma or Canon?
2) Is the 1.4x markedly better in terms of sharpness than the 2x?

Would appreciate any feedback on this.

No. Only lenses with elements at the back of the lens that are quite recessed, as the two Canon extenders have protruding lens elements, and the 2X even more so than the 1.4X.
In principle, according to Canon, the Canon extenders will only work on zooms and primes which cover at least 135 mm and are of L designation. So 70-200L (all), 100-400L, 135L, 200L, etc.
They will also work with the TS-E lenses, and with macro lenses provided you put an extension tube between lens and extender/converter. This from personal experience :).

If you want a converter that works with more lenses, you'll have to try the Kenko DG Pro 300 series. very good IQ, as good as the Canons people say. I guess I have to agree (my Soligor is a rebadged Kenko).

2) Is the 1.4x markedly better in terms of sharpness than the 2x?

I use the 2X only in case of urgency, because I think you lose too much with a 2X. The 1.4X you lose about a "school mark" in IQ, but it certainly is less noticeable with high quality, very well corrected lenses that it is with cheaper stuff. The 2X apparently was designed with the 300 F/2.8L in mind, and from what I have seen, the IQ-loss is negligible with that particular lens.

The reason I got myself the 100-400L is simply because of IQ-loss with the 70-200 and 2X extender, and impracticalities such as loss of AF and resulting very small maximum aperture. Plus, IQ-loss with a zoom and a 2X is always more than with an excellent prime or good zoom lens in the same range as the other lens with an extender or converter.

Kind regards, Wim

Many thanks Wim for that detailed reply. As I know nothing about converters it could ba a minefield for me!:)
based on what you say, it looks like I need something like a 100-400L, and a 1.4x. converter.
I will think about it ....many thanks.

Do note that adding a 1.4X converter to the 100-400 will bring it to a F/6.3-F/8 140-560, which means that autofocus will only work with a 1D body, as this will AF to F/8, and all the others only to F/5.6.

You can work around this by taping the leftmost 3 pins at the front of the extender or converter, but AF can be erratic regardless at the relatively low light that will reach the AF sensors. BTW, this is the reason why I got the Soligor (rebadged Kenko): it is permanently taped so I can use it with the 100-400 if need be, and still retain AF in good light.

Kind regards, Wim
