when the 1D MkIII was announced, there were pics of the camera body and sample pics it took. (which were beautiful btw)

when the D3 was announced, there were lots of pics of the camera body but NO sample pics. what gives?!?

--- just me thinking out of the box --- ;)

Nikon has fans?! :) ....seriously though...the camera specs look beast-like...but I myself am still content with my 1dmk3....and with the Canon brand.

what is Noink trying to hide? ..... they now use CMOS sensors, boast of very high ISO capabilities but where are the sample pics for crying out loud?!?!? :(

Well if imaging-resource initial comments run true then i don't think they've got much to hide or fear..........

The D3's high ISO is really impressive I'll remain at least somewhat skeptical until we can get a D3 back in the lab and test it under controlled conditions, but Nikon showed some incredibly impressive prints at the event. They had enlargements that must have been 30x45 inches or more in size, comparing identical shots taken with the D3 and Canon EOS-1D Mark III at ISO 3,200 and 6,400.

After the disappointment of the D2H, I have to say I was taking Nikon's claims of low noise at high ISOs with a rather large grain of salt. When I saw the aforementioned prints though, I was literally flabbergasted. The D3 didn't just surpass the 1D Mark III, it far surpassed it. Well, that may be a little strong; the Mark III is a fantastic camera, but the difference between its images and those from the D3 was anything but subtle. As I say, I'll remain a skeptic until we can test a production sample of the D3 ourselves, but if the images shown had any basis in reality (and Nikon would be foolish to have doctored them in any way), it looks like there's a new leader in the high-ISO / low-noise derby, and it's the D3.

There AF system is definitely much better than the Canon's.

Showing prints in Nikon marketing event is not what I'd consider a good comparison. I can show prints where 300D kills Mark III in noise, it's all matter of what you want to show. Because of the low mp and full frame I do not doubt that noise is low, but based on everything we have seen from Nikon they do low noise with software NR which kills the details in the end. Did they suddenly invent clean ISO 6400 - I seriously doubt it?

Why didn't they just hand DVD's full of demo images? No demo images anywhere.

Maybe Nikon announces stuff before they design and build it.

i have to agree with that somewhat. while i shoot canons, my assistant shoots with a D70 and D200. sometimes, we swap gear and i have to say that his D200 acquires focus faster (just by a little bit) in low light.

one thing i hate about Nikons is color. i do all the RAW processing after an event and after processing the Nikon RAW files to JPEG, the colors just look strange to me. i can never get them to match my Canon JPEGs exactly. maybe its not color, maybe its something else ... or maybe im just used to seeing Canon JPEGs. i dunno ....

Tell the public what they want to hear. Now they gotta figure out how to do what they promised. ;)

Seems like they may have gotten the dual-card part right! (but that's about it)

Well if the D3's AF performs with no hick-ups like the MKIII Darth, Vader will be getting lot's of company :)

I think you are seeing the differences between CMOS and CCD, which might start to narrow now that Nikon has begun using CMOS too. The differences between CMOS and CCD were a lot more pronounced some years ago, both have improved in many respects.

I also suspect a lot of the differences you find may be just because you have a well-established "workflow" for the Canon files, the Nikon may need different tweaking to be equal.

Like you, I work with someone who shoots Nikon equip. The files are noticeably different initially, but each of us can end up with fairly similar results after post-processing our RAW files in our own ways.
