Good point, but who needs 21 or 16 or 14 megapixels for that matter.

Need them? Not me. But Canon thinks that someone needs them. Heck Hassy thinks people need 39 of them. ;)

how could people be possibly be comparing the AF accuracy of the 40D vs D300 when no one's tried either?

Same way people are judging ISO performance... past reviews and a lot of guessing

$3K is certainly a big difference in $$$, but the 1Ds would be more a competitor to medium format, no? plus, it's the 3rd gen FF body from canon, as opposed to nikon's debut entry.

and i am really curious as to what price gap would cause people to switch systems? $300? $500? unless you are just starting out in a DSLR system, i can't see someone w/ one or two bodies and 3-5 lenses and/or flashes specific to one system jumping ship over that sort of price difference, unless they feel the difference is worth it. i personally don't.

has anyone reading this thread ever jumped from system A to system B?

People are fickle, especially when they blame their gear for their photography problems, then its easy to switch, "Nikon or Canon will make me a better photographer" ;)

I say enjoy your 20D, 30D, 1DMII, 5D, they are still and will continue to be great camera's that take great pictures in the right hands. (Great time to buy a used camera, people are dumping them left and right)

Look in other threads slick and a few in here as well getting 'pulled'... Doesnt matter, thes ekind of threads turn hostile, bunch of speculation, whats if's etc.

Nothings been pulled FYI, we see three threads on the same subject, they get merged together, we see threads in the wrong forum, they get moved.

I am loyal to Canon, but I love the competition, good for the consumers :)

I agree, but then now we'll have to wait until the next product cycle :)

I have to downsize my 1DsMII files to get them on Smugmug. I have made 20x30 prints with a 20D. I believe anything over 8 is great ;)

I am excited to see what this new parity between the Big Two does to prices,. I expect prices will come down faster than ever before.

The announcement getting the least fan fare that actually has the LARGEST impact on the Canon Vs. Noink debate that one faces is the Supertele updates.

Noink has been allowing Canon to absolutely RULE the roost with the only full IS equipped line up of Super Telephoto lenses.

Now anyone using a Super tele for there bread and butter has rel reason to consider Noink, where as just yesterday the choice was obviously Canon.

This with the D3, is the biggest difference.
Noink has compared well with Canon for many years now on the Hobbies and "prosumer" models,. but Canon has absolutely dominated the Pro level bodies with the 1 series since the first 1D

With the D3 and the Super teles, Canon has REAL competition in this area.

The ad group I do some work for just did a series of images for a company to be used for airport advertising. These images are 36x60 and displayed just feet from people walking by at LHR. Image quality for the product is critical. 8 or 10 mpx images are not an option. We shot this at 32 mpx. But the new Canon could have done the job as well. So as mentioned, this is a MF competitor, and from the looks of it, a really nice one since is is so much quicker then what we have been using.

Thats why the increased mpx counts. And no, it's not intended for the hobby shooter.... not that a few will still not buy one.

I hope there are price drops, but both of these products haven't come out yet.
Or do you mean price drop to the current generation?

The release prices are MSRP's, the actual selling price will come down faster then it would have been

Oh, I thought I saw that they were street prices, not MSRPs. In this day and age, I thought MSRPs are done for haha.
