Expect D60 availability in 2 weeks - Have questions.

Feedback is greatly appreciated. Currently I have a G2 and while I have been tremendously pleased with the camera's ability to capture images, I am a looking for the things the D60 offers over the G2. The body should be available in 2 weeks.

If I buy the D60 body, I am not eager to replace the two lenses I currently have, that is the 28-105 and 75-300IS Canon lenses. I know the lack of a full frame sensor magnifies flaws in the lenses, and I know these are not the best two lenses that Canon sells in their respective ranges, but will the images be a reasonable step up from the G2? If I must also buy another 2K of glass to do better than I am doing with my G2, I think I will have to pass on the D60 body.

So, question. D60 body and existing lenses: Big step up from G2, or frustration from spending $2.2K on body and pulling hair out because of lack of “L� glass?

You definitely do not have to have L glass to take advantage of the D60. I think the two lenses you have will be just fine for you to take breathtaking images. DPreview.com is down right now, but there was just a link on the Canon SLR forum that had some images from both of these lenses that were stunning.

I think if you compared the 28-105 @ f/8 with the 28-70L @f/8 I think you'd be surprised how little difference there is between the two. A bigger difference appears at wide open aperatures.

Thanks for the replies. I have been satisfied with the performance of these two lenses on my ElanIIe. Given the fact that the D60 is far from full frame, I was worried that these lenses may not fair well on the D60. I will probably need to buy a wide lens, but did not want to change out all my glass for now. The store I put my name in for a D60 said they should be able to fill the order in two weeks. If I buy the camera and am unhappy with the performance, at least I could sell it and not lose any money.

Local camera shop. Called to ask about price/availability. They said that they should be able to fill order in 2 weeks. The reality may be different, but I placed my order. Will post this thread when I get the call, and if I decided to buy. I think I will, but will miss several features on the G2. I don't believe I will keep both cameras, and if I do, I definately won't carry both around with me.

If you are happy with these 2 lenses on the Elan, there is no reason to expect a decline in image quality with the D60.
As you are aware, the 28-105 becomes approx. 45mm at the wide end due to sensor size in the D60. Therefore, you may eventually desire something wider, such as the Canon 20-35 ($370) or Sigma 15-30 ($549), but for now you have a good start. (Prices USA lenses at B&H).

You don't need L glass but I would stay away from the cheaper Tamron, low end Sigma, etc. My day to day lense is a 28-135 IS I love that lens and do a lot of close up stuff with it ( http://www.through-my-lens.com/biogarden/HTM​L/index.htm ).

For outdoors nature stuff I have a 100-400 L IS lens. I tried the 170-500 and 50-500 sigma and must say even with a 2x II tele converter on the 100-400 its sharper than those lenses.

You might try to get a wide angle lens if you do landscape or indoor work to ofset the 1.6 effect of the D60/30
