Canon batteries vs. generics (BP-511)

I'm looking to get a grip for my 5D, and I'm pricing batteries. On ebay, bp-511 prices vary from $49 (Canon) to $2.32 (non-oem). Is this the case of you get what you pay for, or are the generic batteries every bit as good as the big name?

I'd love to hear from folks who have done the comparison - who have used both.

I just picked up a battery from here seems to work good so far. Good price for a 2000mAh battery.

I use Lenmar brand from Thomas distributing _ very good high quality replacement.

I trust batteries from SterlingTek more than any other and they last longer than the Canon broand! I've been using them over 3 years.

I'm using both and they both work great. I can take a few hundred shots and only lose 1 bar of battery.. I can't tell the difference between the both batteries because they're both practically the same to me

I bought two BP511's from Sterling but they don't seem to hold a charge. The original battery with the camera is a BP511A. Did I order the wrong battery? I thought it was just the mAh that was different. Sorry for the rookie question!

Mine seem to work just fine. I sold my Canon ones and have 2 1600mah and 2 2000mah and they last a very long time. Love them! Can't beat it.

Now I'm confused. The batteries seem to work fine in the camera but wind up showing as dead in the grip after only a few pics. I put them back on the charger and they show as full right away. My grip is new but I suppose it could be bad?

Could be the grip BUT those are all the signs of a battery gone bad. Try each battery SEPERATELY without the grip. If either battery dies after a few shots and then shows a full charge after 30 seconds in the charger, take a sharpie pen and write BAD on it then toss it in the recyle bin at BestBuy next time you're there.

another issue is that the first grips made were defective. They would show a somewhat depleted charge when in fact the batteries were fuly charged. Somewhere there is a Canon recal on the grips. I sent mine in and it was repaired for free.
