Took these shots of heron on the 23rd June in the morning with my 30D and 70-200mm f4. It was backlit so I did the best I could then and with pp'ing.

My post processing (levels, contrast, colour saturation; crop and resize for web; sharpening) was done in Elements 5 with an uncalibrated monitor (gotta save some money to get some software).

I think I see something

I like the second shot for pose and composition but it is a pity about the harsh light.

Comments and crits are much appreciated.

Very nice bird and poses, but try and shoot it right to begin with, instead of processing it later. It will introduce a lot less noise that way. I see in your EXIF that you did not use any exposure compensation. the 30D does Ev very well.

Set your On switch to the second On position, the line. Now, the rear wheel will allow you to set Exposure compensation on the fly by just thumbing the wheel right or left. Try it. You will see the marker at the bottom left, that line of dots. The marker should be in the center.

So for those first two shots, with shade on this side of the bird, thumb in some Positive Ev, like start with 2 marks, 2/3. Take the shot, look at the preview. It might need a bit more, 1/1 or even 1 1/3. You'll get use to it and be able to do it without looking at preview every time.

For 3 and 4, maybe just one mark Positive, to the right side of center. What all this does is to over ride the light meter settings and tell the shutter to cycle slower by 1/3 stop per mark, in effect, under exposing the shot, so the shaded side has a chance to expose more. The brights will get brighter though, like the background, but the bird will look good.

Or, get yourself a flash and use fill flash. Always the first choice. ;)

Thanks for looking Colyn, and for the advice Mitch.

I actually use exposure compensation quite a lot now but I hadn't even had a go at it when I took these photos. I also think my excitement at actually seeing this wonderful bird for the first time ever got the better of me. It's just a pity that I haven't seen one since :(
