I went to see my friend the bee keeper again.
All Canon gear: Xti (manual mode F16, 1/200, ISO 100) + MPE-65mm macro lens. MT-24EX with home made diffusers (external link). Really Right Stuff flash bracket. Life size to 1.5 times life size.

The bee in this last photo is providing air conditioning by locking onto the honey comb and rapidly beating its wings. I placed my hand close to it and could actually feel a lot of air move! There were several bees stationed throughout the comb who were trying to keep the hive cool in the 37C (98F) heat.

I kept my movements slow and easy, and I was with an experienced bee keeper. Never, ever, approach a hive and start shooting...
