Those first 2 look like something out of star wars or war of the worlds.

What was the purpose of the sea forts?

The look very vulnerable.

Hello

There are 3 sets of forts that were built during WWII in Thames estuary. They were anti aircraft defenses and at one time were all connected by walk ways. They have been used since for pirate radio stations and an artist lived on one for 40 days & 40 nights.

more info - http://en.wikipedia.org …Forts#Maunsell_Army_Forts (external link)

Unfortunately the ones in the photos above are to be demolished, but the other set is being restored so you can actually climb up and have a look around.

I always remember looking out to sea as a child and wondering what they were, it was great to get up close to them.

I wanted to go there earlier in the year, still hope to.

Mr-Beama did you get very wet? There can be quite a bit of splash from experience.

Hi Mstar

we went with bayblast and didn't get wet, but it all depends on the conditions. we tried to go last month and they told us we would get soaked as it was pretty choppy out there. so best time to go if you taking your camera is when its calmer.

there is also a bigger boat that sails from whitstable, it more expensive and takes longer, but you can walk around and take more gear.
