I'll be on my vacation in about 2 weeks, I usually carry my laptop with me. Since I have 3 kids and all the camera gears, I don't have another hand for a laptop. Can someone recommend a good portable drive (20GB) for me, and where can I buy it.

Thanks.

what i did while i was on vacation was that i used a Muvo2 4g card in my camera and just dumped it to my laptop every night once i got back to the room.

so maybe u could still take the notebook and get a larger card etc. it is a lot nicer not having to worry about filling up a card on a days outting. my 10d gets like 850 or so RAW images on the 4g card.

just a thought

The venerable old VP-2030 and the newer VP-2060 portable storage drives by Vosonics seem to pop up on the marketplace here and there, even under other brand labels.

Have you considered the portable ~$200 CD burners with slots for memory cards?

I use a 40gig Image Tank G2 to suppliment my CF cards when I'm on a large shoot. You turn it on, pop a CF card into the slot, hit EXE and let it download the files. I used 20 gigs of space during on week of shooting and didn't have a problem with any of it. It also comes in a 20 gigs size or just the case if you have your own laptop harddrive that you can put into it.

Oh yes! Imho, the FlashTrax is THE one to get. I just received mine last Monday. :D If you shoot raw AND want to view your photos then there's really no other choice.

Anyway, here's a link I found that lists pretty much every device: http://fhoude34.free.fr/PortableHD_Main.htm (external link)

The list is very comprehensive although the details may be lacking.

I have been using the 15GB iPod with Belkin reader. I've used up about 4GB to house my CD collection; the rest is free for RAW photo files. Not a bad choice if you don't need to view the photos. If you listen to music, there will be one less device to pack by consolidating the two.

The FlashTrax plays MP3 too. Plus, it can play motion JPEG AVI and MOV files. :D

But yeah, if you don't need to view your photos then there are several very good alternatives.

I bought MediaGear's "Flash-HD to go!" a few weeks back before a 10-day trip. The 40GB version ($249) was on special for $199. It works fine, although if you need to be able to review your pictures from the PSD, this isn't the device for you. I went for price over features, and I believe I got what I paid for. They also make a 20Gb version.
