I'm not sure if this is considered spam but I'm really curious to know if I got ripped off or not. I live in Korea and I bought this camera not from the Canon store but from an independent store.

This is what I got.

Canon EOS 400D and it's accessories.
Extra battery.
Sigma Lens 18-200mm
4G Memory Card
Canon Bag
Lens Protector
Lens Cleaning Kit
USB Memory Reader

for $1322 USD.

I also want to ask a question. He told me that the 4G memory card costs $192 USD. Is this right?

Another thing is this guy try to sell me a used camera before I got mine exchanged. I took the first photo and the file was IMG_8356.jpg and I was like WTF? So I went back to him and confronted him and he gave me a new camera this time. His excuse was that some memory card have different numbers and I know for sure ALL CANON CAMERAS start with IMG_0001.jpg

So I got pissed off, so I told him I want to exchange everything and made sure everything was new. Even the memory card. I got him back for trying to sell me a used camera though. While I was making sure that my new camera's photo started with IMG_0001.jpg using the old memory card. He gave me a new 4G memory card. He was busy with other customers so he didn't bothered with me much. So I went home with my new camera and my new memory card. Later realizing that I had my old memory card inside my camera.

So I ended up with an extra memory card for free. It was so worth it.

Anyways I would really appreciate if you guys could give me some feedback because internet prices are so unreliable to compare IMO.

A 4GB CF costs around $50-$60. What brand/speed did you get?

Anyway, compared with US prices it seems high but I have no idea what the prices in Korea are.

You were wrong about the image number.
You should apologize to the guy and return the card, although he grossly overstated its price..

Camera inherits the number from the (previously used) memory card *if that number is higher* than current image number.
That happens automatically, as soon as you insert the card, you don’t even have to power on the camera.
Remember: image number means NOTHING and it has very little to do with number of shutter actuations!

What we see depends mainly on what we look for.

Just a quick check at B&H shows that you can get the XTi for $640 and the Siggy for $380 so those two alone are $1020 Depending on the quality of the other stuff, your in the ballpark though $200 for a 4 gig card is a lot. I recently got a 8 gig Sandisk for $40 after the rebate and you see deals on 4gig cards often.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

Am I correct in thinking that toosik's new 400D will carry on using the image # from the old card (8356) or whatever?

Sounds like a reasonable price for a small store package. And if you'd used the card in your previous camera but hadn't reformatted it in your computer before putting it into the 400D (or if you tested it with a card he had around), you definitely owe him an apology (and his card). The camera does inherit a higher frame number from a used card without your doing anything about it. Frame number is meaningless in that regard. I could set yours to any frame number you wanted to by playing with the available options and renaming files on a card.

Sounds similar to what the notorious camera stores in New York City are known for. Selling the camera real cheap, but bundling worthless accessories for next to nothing.

But it sounds like you got the camera and accessories already. As long as the accessories are things you can use, I wouldn't say you were ripped off. I don't know what prices are like in Korea.....but I know other parts of the world where $1322 for all that you got would be a steal. Since these are name brand accessories (unlike the NYC "bait and switch" stores), I'd say you did pretty good....once you had to grill him for selling new instead of used that is!!

$1020 at B&H is on the seriously low side for reliable dealers. B&H can make that because they do a lot of volume. If you walk into a local store in the US, you'll pay about what you did, and that's even with the local offering a lot of discount based on what it costs him, including overhead. If you don't want to compare Internet prices, then don't use the B&H price. The Internet and mail-order are how they get the volume to keep their prices realistically low.
