Ok, so with Nikon dipping their toe into the 35mm FF market do you think we will see a price war pushing the price down of future full frame sensors in more affordable bodies??

Without doubt over time. Its the way of the world...which is good for everyone :)

I remember when cheap DSLR's were close to £2k and you can get them now for £350+ or there abouts so I'd say its absolutely going to get better and cheaper in the future.

I hope they fight tooth and nail. I really want to jump into full frame, but I think that the price of the 5D is way too much for what it actually is (Forget he 1Ds!) Hopefully Nikon will help to make Canon prices more realistic in the future. We need even competition, it seems that Nikon is finally making some progress.

I don't think so, full frame sensors are the reason they cost so much. I don't see the price of the sensor coming down.

I think we will but not yet for a while.
Nikon's FF camera is not anywhere in the pricerange of the 5D and won't compete with that, so we will have to wait another generation of DSLR's at least.

The 5D is still the most affordable FF......and you get slightly less MP with the Nikon D3X. I'm guessing that Nikon is introducing FF for the action sports demographic: as the D3X is not in the same category as the 5D.

So better scoop up the 5D when the MkII comes out: it's going to be the cheapest FF for awhile;):D

Ok, time to start another war. ;) So the price of the body comes down a few hundred bucks and you slap on your $1100 300mm f/4 and are pi$$ed because the birdies are so small causing you to have to dish out $5500 on a 500mm f/4. it took you $4400 to save $500. Heck, canon ought to just give the FF cameras away. Start with me. Canon, where is my free camera. :)

When I compare my bird shots taken with Provia 400 and a 1.4x extender they are no where near as good as those taken with a 20D, ISO 400 and no extender. There is less grain/noise, the shutter speed is twice as fast and the birds look marginally closer.

I don't think there will be a full frame price war. I think the companies are smart enough to realize that as long as there is a market for crop bodies, there's no need to lower the price to attract people to go full frame. And while they are the only two companies who currently sell full frame bodies (minus kodak? they have one, dont they?), they sort of have a monopoly in their favor.

Nikon is famous to jack the prices up NOT down an in fact they have been only controlled to show their full greediness by the mere presence of competition.

Kodak failed to show a sign of success with their FF.

Now if there be a war, its going to rest on others shoulder.

Olympus seems to move in the other direction, shrinking the frame size.

After all isn't that this is at least one war that is good for everyone, especially the consumers?

that's a great comparison Scott. we all know if you had your way we'd revise history and remove all trace of the expression "full frame".....:D.
