I tried to turn the camera on, and it made a funny jamming noise, the screen turned on to the "opening" screen + then went black..and a little "E15" appeared on the lower left corner. ..Then it totally seemed to shut off.
The jamming sounds like its coming from the lens area.
I have no idea how this could have happened besides it getting bounced around in my bag, but nothing really heavy was in there.
Is there a way to fix it [how much?] or am I totally out of luck?

I had the same problem with my A70 took it for a service and they said there was sand in it , which made sense as i had been taking pic on the beach before it happened.

I don't know for sure but it seems that the code means there is a failed part in the camera.

As the camera boots up, it checks things as it turns things on. One of those things is the lens. It commands the lens into the start up position. For SOME reason, the lens can not do that, so sends the central CPU an error message (or does not send a success message) the central CPU sees this, pops up the error message on the LCD and shuts down.

The REASON for the failure could be any of numerous things. It could be something hit the camera or lens, it could (more likely) something got into the gear mechanism and jams the gears or tracks. It could be water damage causing a short circuit. It could even be a warranty issue.

Take it in for servicing.
