Early tomorrow morning will be a total lunar eclipse. This will be visible between 12:53AM to 5:23AM (3:37AM is the peak of the eclipse) in the Orange County, California area. I don't know how far our the total eclipse will be visible but I would image it should be visible throughout most of Southern California area. Here's a link to more info:

I have the same lenses as you have exactly, except that I have a 20D. Can you suggest some settings to put my camera on to shoot this lunar eclipse(first attempt at this)? I am fairly new to the DSLR scene so any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated. I am assuming that it is best to use a tripod for these shots and also should I remove the lenshood from my 70-200mm 2.8l usm IS lens?

You should have several test shots with 70-200mm lense (Mounted on a tripod). Your lense hood won't matter. You can try this settings:

Focal length: 160.0mm
Exposure time: 1/6400
Aperture: f/2.8
ISO equiv.: 400
Exposure bias: 0.33
Whitebalance: Auto
Metering Mode: matrix
Exposure: shutter priority (semi-auto)

Good luck!

I'm thinking of giving it a try, but I don't know if I can drag myself out of bed (I think the peak is around 2:00 a.m. here, but I'm not sure). We have an XTi and I'd like to try a moon shot or two - or more - with our 100 - 300 lens.

If I can wake up at 3:51am, I will try to get some shots of each of the phases.

Well, I guess I was not the only one chasing the moon all night.
Here are my results, sorry these are 400x300 pixels only.
All taken with 400mm focal length with my EOS 20D.
