What is the reason for "AF-ON" button for? How does it differ from the " * " button?

The AF-ON button will do essentially the same thing while letting the exposure lock button handle exposures. Sweet new gear for a photogenic new year!

While it might seems like very little difference, when I'm holding the body my thumb naturally falls to the spot Canon's placed the AF On button. Not that it's worth the upgrade just for the button.... Canon 1D3, Sigma 70-200 f2.8, Sigma 120-300 f2.8 (sale), 1.4x converter, 580EX.

If it's set up anything like the Mark III, both the shutter button and the AF-ON button would allow you to focus unless you set the custom function so that the shutter button doesn't do focusing anymore. ...Leo

Ah, that's what I would hope for. I wasn't too clear earlier, but I don't want the shutter button to ever do focusing. Julie

Wish I had that on my 400D... You can certainly set-up a custom function on the 350D to have the * button act as focus lock, so I would expect the same from the 400D. Colin
