What is the reason for "AF-ON" button for? How does it differ from the " * " button?

Basically, it's to eliminate the need for setting CF 4-1. IIRC it's re-programmable to a couple of other functions though.

The * button is the exposure lock button, which can be turned into a focus button on previous cameras. The AF-ON button will do essentially the same thing while letting the exposure lock button handle exposures.

Sweet new gear for a photogenic new year!

I personally like the location of the AF-ON button. While it might seems like very little difference, when I'm holding the body my thumb naturally falls to the spot Canon's placed the AF On button. Not that it's worth the upgrade just for the button....

Does it work like CF 4-1 in that depressing the shutter button won't focus?

I switch mine depending on whether I'm wearing gloves or not. The "*" button is a lot easier to locate for some reason...

If it's set up anything like the Mark III, both the shutter button and the AF-ON button would allow you to focus unless you set the custom function so that the shutter button doesn't do focusing anymore.

Ah, that's what I would hope for. I wasn't too clear earlier, but I don't want the shutter button to ever do focusing.

Stupid question but this is the button that "locks" the focus on the 40D, right?

Wish I had that on my 400D...

You can certainly set-up a custom function on the 350D to have the * button act as focus lock, so I would expect the same from the 400D.
