I drove from Portland down to Bend, OR yesterday to camp with some friends up in the Cascades. I didn't want to take my full kit, so I just put my 30d and two small lenses into a Sling 100. Once I had my tent all set I pulled out the camera to do a little shooting. Fired off my first click, check the screen only to see "No CF Card" vmad Grabbed my P&S, same deal. vmadvmad

Turns out I had taken both cards and my card reader in my computer bag to the library to do some PP and email some pics. As soon as I got home, I remembered to put the reader with the cards back in my big bag, but didn't put them in the cameras. When I swapped bags I forgot to take the cards along. Lesson learned, but I missed some great shots.

For that very reason I keep a 2 gig card in each bag and battery just in case. That saved me a few weeks ago.

usually keep a CF card in my wallet now and also try to remember to take a shot before leaving home. As you say, lesson learned.

A few years ago, hiked to the top of diamond head on oahu with all my gear on. Long, hot hike. Got to the top, no CF. Left the top with only memories, no pics. Sucks but it happens.

Hmmm,

In the "good old days" you could walk into practically any store and buy a few rolls of 35mm film.... Now, well it so happens my grocery store has CF cards, but their prices are ridiculous!

I've done the same thing, but luckily I had a small extra card with me. I've also used the memory card out of my cell phone with an adapter.

I keep a backup battery, & cf card in the glove box of my car, I never take them out unless I forgot to bring a card or battery. Also as a secondary measure I always try to put a fresh card/battery in my camera the moment I take one out. It helps if you have 4+ batteries/cf cards so you always have a card/battery ready to go.

Its one of those things you don't think of having a backup for until you forget your battery/cf card one day. I'm pretty sure everyone has done it or will do it at least once.

As someone said i am pretty sure we have all done similar.

I went for a drive to an ocean beach, took my new 1Ds, a very heavy tripod and a few lenses and went for a long walk along the cliff trails, finally set up to take some shots and tried to turn the camera on...nothing...slight panic..tried again..nothing..I had left the AC adaptor battery in and left the real battery at home.

I wasn't happy. But once you do it, it's doubtfull you'll do it again.

Start your out board boat engine at home, not at the boat ramp, as its embarrassing to hold every one up.
The same for a photo shoot.
Assemble your gear how you want to shoot with it, do a test click, then pack.

HEY! HO!
LETS GO!
