Hi. I just took a major dive into debt today & bought a new lighting setup. I was on the phone for an hour with B&H to come up with this "kit". Here's what I'm getting - roughly.

3 - Arri 650watt Fresnel lights with barn doors & scrims
and stands to go with.

I thought I was getting a softbox too, but I was so confused by the time I hung up, that I maybe forgot to put that in.

Anyway - since I've never used these before, does anyone else use this type of setup & can give me some pointers? -- like: "don't put them any closer than 20 feet from the subject" or something...

I plan to put one directly above/behind me and the other two off to my sides a ways.

I bought these to use in churches/large buildings for groups of people - weddings, confirmations, reunions, etc. Whatever the situation may be, I wanted enough wattage to light everyone evenly in some massive churches (we have very elaborate - cathedral ceilings around my area that bouncing doesn't work)

I use a 20d with a 430ex flash & I just couldn't get the power out of everything like I needed for groups.

Thanks so much.

Why did you go with hot lights instead of flash units?
IMHO 650W is *not* much if you want soft lighting...
