Horizon is dead center, do a search on this site for "rule of thirds". I like the colors.

Would croping help in the rule of thirds?

It's a nice enough image, great colors, crop works better but it doesn't say 'Grand Canyon'. More like large, flat land. Oh, with a bump on the right.

Have to agree with Dave...you could have said sunset over the Mojave and it would have been impossible to dispute.

...but great colors and the crop definitely improved it.

Cheers!

Try this; start over, crop sky rather than ground, horizon 1/3 from top, then apply a very small amt of fill light in ACR. That should bring out enough of the canyons to make it interesting.

I just brought this into CS3 and there are some incredible canyons and peaks on that dark area. Needed major boosts in Shadows/highlights so perhaps with the original RAW file it would come up nicely.

tuna, I actually like the way it is silhouetted. as for cropping and composition, other than making the horizon not at midline, I dont know how much more there is to do. as for detail in the shadows, I think this image works primarily as a back lit image, with the tones and colors, and not so much the details. I do agree that it does not scream grand canyon.
I was there in may and found it difficult to really capture the greatness of it in images
