It's not really a macro, but I didn't know where else to go with it. Actually I'm more wanting to know what kind of spider it is, because it was so dang cute!

Also, anyone have tips on achieving better pictures with the kit lens that came with the Rebel XT (I also have the 70-200mm, but I'm pretty sure that wouldn't give me better results for something like this... someone please prove me wrong). I'd like to take insect pictures, but I have yet to attain a macro lens... so this is about the best I'll get to use until then.

Ideas?

I had 70-200F4 L IS ...+ Raynox DCR250 here ...check this post :

It's not easy task , It take time to practice and understand how to control DOF ...when you good at it ...you can shot this lens 70-200F4L with Raynox DCR250 for any insect .

Lovely little jumping spider- they do look cute.
You could get a camera body reversing ring like this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk …ZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcm​dZViewItem (external link)
and reverse the kit lens onto the body. This will give you magnifications upto 3:1 (lens set around 28mm). You do need to stop down the lens first by attaching it normally, setting to say F8 in Av mode, pressing down the DOF preview button and removing the lens whilst keeping the button depressed. This results in a slightly dim viewfinder but works quite well in Tv or M modes.
