my 30D does an automatic count. I see it in the LCD screen with a numerical value of say : 100/654 - meaning it has taken 654 pictures so far.

There is no way of obtaining an actuation count from any Canon DSLR that isn't a 1-series.

Canon techs can do it, but we can't. Sigh.

Take a photo. Preview the shot. Then hit the info button. Whatever the number is in the upper right corner minus it's first two digits should be the number of your shutter actuations.

For example mine says "106-9978". I have taken 69,978 shots with my 30D thus far.

That only tells you which image of the total photos you have on your current CF card you are currently viewing.

That works only if you haven't manually reset the counter. The first number is the "folder number", if I'm not mistaken, and it gets incremented whenever you go past 9999 shots in the current number or when you reset the counter manually.

If you never reset your counter, and ALWAYS format your cards before shooting, there's a chance that the folder/image number system will be useful to you.

Assuming you filled every folder up, never reset the frame counter, never inserted a card from another camera (with higher frame number) into your camera, that's about it. Doesn't count shots when there wasn't a CF card in the camera, only the actual images captured to a card. So, for instance, if someone's been doing Remote Capture to their computer's HDD, that won't be counted.

Providing that you never resets the serial number, which I had never done so. How bout the serial number photo? Let's say your last photo number is 878-7847, I think it means that you have taken 77 847 image. Anyone can verify?
