Finding the right title for a thread is key to getting traffic, but whether people take the time to reply depends on the picture. What do you think of this one? What can I do to make it better?

Also, do you see any room for words (like Daddy and Maddie, summer 2007, whatever)?

I might consider bumping the saturation on the background just a bit, and maybe go back to the originals and due some straightening before cropping (those crooked gutters are catching my eye) Other wise I like it a lot (way better than I could do!)

Hi Erin,

Thanks for the tip. I did this collage the hard way in Photoshop! I imported the pics, resized, drew a white box as border for each pic, merged the layers, added drop shadow and copied it to each layer. The background started out as a full color, full sized shot, but i desaturated it with Channel Mixer adjustment layer, monochrome, at 86% opacity.

It wasn't pretty, and it wasn't quick either, so if anyone else has a better idea... :)

Dekalb, thanks for the feedback. I agree, those gutters are annoying. I'll play around some more with the background saturation...I wasn't sure if the color would be too distracting, or whether I should fit the spinning Nemo into the picture or not.

Dodz, nice edit! That text works well. Good to see another local on the board. :) What part of town are you in?

Erin, search the forums for some other collage threads...I've seen some good ones.

I'm in Gainesville....

Thanks, Jen! We spent a lot of time with these friends over the summer. Their little girl is finally big enough to play with both of my kids now and it has been great practice with my 20D. There's something about water pictures in the summer time--give me a little zoom, a short exposure and a wide aperture and I'm a happy guy!

I'm not at all a designer, but the carefree spirit and playfulness of the images might warrant a more haphazzard arrangement? And perhaps get rid of the borders and add a shadow? I don't know....here's a really rough version of what I'm talking about. But I love the concept.

Hey, Bob, that's exactly what I was looking for! Nice cloning work too as far as quick edits go. ;)

As you can tell, I'm not much of a designer myself, :-/ but I knew it needed something to make it pop and that works very well. I'll play around with it some more tonight.

Hey Joe...I see you're in N.Va. What part? I'm in Leesburg.

I think the border made the collage look too neat and organized. And I think that random sizes and placement will also add to the effect. But I would try to show more of the sprinkler perhaps, so that the connection is more obvious. But again, I am NOT a designer, only my gut feel.

Actually the cloning was very haphazzard and quick...I was just trying to cover us the borders of the original images, just to give you an idea.

Good luck. Would love to see the finished image.

Bob

Bob, PM sent. I'll see if I can bring the sprinkler into the picture somehow. Thanks again for the tips.

I would work on removing the sprinkler from the background image. The viewer knows it's there from the other images. I think in the background it becomes distracting.
