I don't know very much about the economics around manufacturing something as complex as a digital SLR so here it goes. Would it be feasible for canon to offer 2 versions of the 5d mkII? One with a body similar to the current model and updated features and one with a Pro sized/ weather sealed body perhaps? With an obvious mark up of course. Any thoughts?

The "5DMkII" with a pro-sized weather sealed body is the 1DsMkIII. They're not gonna do two FF 1-series at once.

I've always said they should have a 1Ds classic. 11.1mp body, 3 inch screen and iso 3200.

Aint gonna happen.

Full frame and some primes.

But surely canon doesn't assume they're going to turn a lot of sales with the 1ds III. A 5d mkII with a pro body priced at say around $3700 would win a ton of wallets. It would have the IQ of a 5d with the durability and protection of a 1 series, but without the 1d III fps and af. Is there some sort of financial aspect that I'm overlooking or is it just canon being canon?

No need to be like that. I'm just saying, it isn't going to happen. If they make a "5DMkII" with a 1-series body, that could hurt 1DsMkIII sales. Not gonna happen. By making a prosumer body on the 5D (and I'm sure, MkII- although it almost certainly won't be named that), they give a FF body to those that need the 1-series features, and one to those that don't.

Just Canon being "Canon" (aka- smart). Refer to above. :-) Don't think they're gonna sell a lot of 1DsMkIII's? They absolutely will. If they didn't sell enough MkII's, they wouldn't have made a MkIII.

I suppose the term "a lot" is relative. Don't you think Canon would make more money by offering a 5d with pro body which would sell like hot cakes as well as the top of the line, near-medium format 1ds. There will always be people with the money and the need for a 1ds. In the meantime they can reach out to a whole lot of people who would otherwise settle for a camera that might only cost $3000.

I still just can't imagine it ever happening. I just can't. A 1-series is a 1-series. xxD series cameras just don't get those features.

It would be pretty sweet though. The ultimate camera in my opinion. That's sort of what I meant by "Canon being Canon". I feel that they don't always make the best camera they can for the price range. If the D3 really delivers the goods, I might have to rethink things a bit. D3 and a D300, or "5D MKII" and 40d?

What they should do is sell the 1ds III for $4500 so we can all own one.

I think with Nikon announcing the new cameras, and Canon took a step back now with rumors that their price they announced "is not finalized". I think they are recognizing Nikon as a bigger competitor than they thought. They'll need to match a D3, but I guess the larger sensor D3x is still to be announced this year (24mp?) and Canon will need to lower their price.

I think a 5D2 with a 1series body would be the ultimate camera. Sell it for $4500 and I'll take 2. I don't need more resolution, just the price!

You realize that the 1Ds line is a very low volume seller, right? Canon has stated their main purpose is to make profit. Canon would sell a lot more 3D FF 16MP sealed body, 45 AF cameras for $3500 than 1Ds3 for $8000. The 3D would add buyers to the FF market and not pull many of those interested in the 1Ds3.

Canon releasing a 5D2 for $2200 and a 3D for $3500 next spring would be the perfect answer for nikon's d3.
